My name is Karen Klaich, and I will be working with your student this school year at the Greenville Learning Center. Although born in Baltimore, Md, I am a product of this area. I attended Pitt County Schools, graduating from JH Rose in 1979. I went to Meredith College in Raleigh then transferred and graduated from East Carolina University in 1983. I retired from a thirty year teaching career in June 2014. I worked as a Teacher Assistant at W.H. Robinson Elementary School, taught sixteen years at A.G. Cox Middle School, and then taught for thirteen years at South Central High School.
I am married to Mark S. Klaich, a local musician, and we are the parents of four adult children, Jennifer (31), Kathryn (29), Joseph (27), and Mark (21), and one precious granddaughter, Melody (4).
I have certification in French, Spanish, English and Social Studies. I received National Board certification in English/Language Arts in 2002, and I renewed my certificate in 2012. While at South Central, I co-authored a class on the Holocaust, which I taught for ten years. I am a Teacher Fellow with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, with the The Olga Lengyel Institute, and with the Echoes and Reflections Program both located in New York City. I have been a member of the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust since 2009, and I am now the Director of Teacher Workshops for the eastern half of North Carolina. I have visited Holocaust-related sites in Germany and Poland (2008,2012), and I organize, plan, and co-facilitate teacher training programs during the summer. I am involved in working on social justice issues within our state. I am also trained in the Hill Center methodology.
I look forward to working with you and your high school student at Greenville Learning Center this school year. Please feel free to call on me. My goal is to help your student be successful. I attach my Curriculum Vitae for your perusal.
Thank you,
KKlaich, NBCT
